iPhone Manipulatives for Teaching Math

Nonesuch, Kate. (2006). Changing the Way We Teach Math: A Manual for Teaching Basic Math to Adults

As I tell my students, you learn math by doing math. But, ABE math is done using workbooks and some students find this method too abstract. Kate Nonesuch describes four strategies to incorporate a more active learning approach in the ABE math classroom, but the one I’m intrigued by is hands-on learning – using manipulatives. Currently, I find myself teaching fractions by drawing pumpkin pies and cutting them in to ever-smaller pieces. I’m going to pursue finding iPhone/iPad apps that allow students to use manipulatives to learn mathematical concepts, especially fractions.
