Video: Dan Meyer TED Talk – Math class needs a makeover

Math textbooks tend to identify the problem type so that the student only has to plug in the new numbers in to an already known formula to solve the problem. But in a real life problem-solving situation – without the numbers or the formula – they get stuck. In this video, Dan Meyer talks about how to get students better at solving problems and more engaged in the problem solving process by teaching patient problem solving – giving them a harder problem with less information.
